Fishing in Rwandan Lakes

Rwanda’s serene lakes are more than scenic backdrops — they are living, breathing ecosystems that sustain communities, wildlife, and a growing eco-tourism movement. For travelers seeking a calm yet authentic encounter with nature, fishing in Rwanda offers both cultural immersion and quiet adventure. Whether casting a line at dawn as mist curls off Lake Kivu, or watching local fishermen glide across twin crater lakes in dugout canoes, this experience unveils a tranquil side of the “Land of a Thousand Hills” that few ever forget.

The Culture of Fishing in Rwanda

Fishing has long been part of Rwanda’s traditional life, deeply woven into the livelihoods of lakeside communities. Early mornings often begin with the rhythmic sound of paddles dipping into water, as fishermen set out in wooden canoes woven with community spirit and teamwork. While subsistence fishing dominates, sport and recreational fishing are slowly gaining attention, particularly around major lakes where sustainable practices are promoted to protect aquatic biodiversity.

Tilapia and Nile perch are the most common catches, though catfish, barbel, and sardines known locally as Isambaza are also abundant. Isambaza is a staple in Rwandan cuisine — often dried and sold in bustling markets or served fresh at lakeside restaurants, offering travelers a taste of the local flavor connected directly to these waters.

Fishing on Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest lake, is a shimmering expanse stretching along the western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known for its clean, calm waters and spectacular sunsets, it’s also the country’s main fishing destination. The lake supports thriving fisheries, primarily centered on Isambaza, which are harvested nightly using lamps that attract the tiny fish to the surface.

Visitors can join local fishermen on evening trips from Gisenyi, Kibuye, or Cyangugu, experiencing the mesmerizing glow of hundreds of lanterns floating across the dark water — a sight that feels almost magical. For recreational anglers, some lodges and tour operators arrange guided fishing excursions using modern or traditional techniques.

Beyond fishing, Lake Kivu invites relaxation and exploration — boat cruises, kayaking, and swimming are popular daytime activities. The lake’s methane-rich depths and volcanic surroundings add a geological mystique that makes it one of Africa’s most unique freshwater bodies.

Fishing on Lakes Burera and Ruhondo

Nestled beneath the volcanic peaks of the Virunga Mountains, Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are twin crater lakes renowned for their breathtaking beauty and peaceful setting. Here, fishing feels intimate and personal. The lakes are stocked with tilapia and catfish, and local fishermen still rely on traditional methods — using nets or hooks from handmade canoes.

For visitors, early morning excursions offer a chance to fish while the volcanoes glow softly in the dawn light. The calm waters reflect the dramatic landscapes, and birdlife is abundant, with kingfishers, cormorants, and herons often accompanying the experience. Many travelers choose to stay at nearby eco-lodges, combining fishing with bird watching, canoeing, or short cultural walks through local villages.

Fishing on Lake Muhazi

Located east of Kigali, Lake Muhazi is a narrow, meandering lake lined with quiet resorts and rural villages. It’s a favorite weekend getaway for both locals and travelers seeking a relaxed fishing experience close to the capital. The lake hosts species such as tilapia and catfish, and its tranquil coves are perfect for shore or boat fishing.

After a morning of casting lines, visitors can enjoy picnics, swimming, or boat rides while watching fishermen return with their day’s catch. The area’s gentle charm and proximity to Kigali make it an ideal escape for those looking to blend leisure with authentic rural life.

Responsible Fishing and Conservation

Rwanda’s lakes are vital ecosystems, and the government places strong emphasis on sustainable fishing. Regulations include restrictions on net sizes, protected breeding zones, and seasonal closures to allow fish populations to recover. Visitors are encouraged to support these efforts by fishing only with licensed guides or community cooperatives that follow conservation practices.

Participating in responsible fishing not only helps protect these precious waters but also contributes to the livelihoods of local communities who rely on them. Many cooperative programs also offer cultural exchanges, giving visitors insight into the daily lives of Rwanda’s lakeside residents.
