Burera and Ruhondo Twin Lakes | Rwanda’s Hidden Highlands Paradise

Tucked away in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, the Burera and Ruhondo Twin Lakes are among Rwanda’s most breathtaking yet tranquil destinations. Located just outside Volcanoes National Park, these two crater lakes mirror each other in form and charm, separated only by a narrow strip of land and framed by the towering peaks of Mount Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura. For travelers seeking peace, beauty, and an authentic glimpse of rural Rwanda, the Twin Lakes offer a perfect escape — serene, scenic, and deeply soulful.

The Beauty of the Twin Lakes

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo lie in Rwanda’s Northern Province, near the town of Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), just a short drive from the park where gorilla trekking adventures begin. The lakes sit at an altitude of over 1,800 meters, surrounded by terraced hillsides, eucalyptus trees, and small villages that seem untouched by time.

From above, the lakes resemble two jewels glistening in the green highlands — Burera deep and dark, Ruhondo lighter and shimmering, both connected by a short river channel that allows water to flow between them. Together, they create a calm contrast to the excitement of Volcanoes National Park, inviting travelers to slow down and savor Rwanda’s quieter side.

Things to Do at Burera and Ruhondo Lakes

1. Canoeing and Boat Rides

Exploring the Twin Lakes by canoe or motorboat is one of the most peaceful and immersive ways to experience their beauty. Glide across the clear waters as fishermen cast their nets from traditional dugout canoes and children wave from the shores. Local guides offer short excursions or half-day boat trips to nearby islands such as Cyakara, Buhoro, and Bushongo, where you can picnic, birdwatch, or simply enjoy the mountain views.

2. Hiking and Nature Walks

The surrounding hills offer scenic trails that provide panoramic views of the lakes and volcanoes. Hikes range from easy strolls along the shores to more challenging climbs up nearby hills like Musanze Hill, where you can see both Burera and Ruhondo glistening below. These walks also provide opportunities to meet local farmers and learn about the terraced agriculture that sustains the region.

3. Bird Watching

The wetlands and islands around the Twin Lakes are teeming with birdlife, making them a haven for bird watchers. You can spot species such as kingfishers, cormorants, herons, and the striking grey crowned crane, Rwanda’s national bird. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to enjoy the melodic calls of birds echoing across the water.

4. Cultural Visits

A visit to the Twin Lakes isn’t complete without experiencing the culture of the people who call this region home. Local communities welcome visitors to join in traditional dance performances, banana beer brewing demonstrations, or village walks that offer insight into Rwandan rural life. The Red Rocks Cultural Centre in nearby Musanze also organizes community tours that combine art, culture, and storytelling.

5. Photography and Relaxation

For photographers, Burera and Ruhondo are a dream — dramatic landscapes, mirror-like reflections, and the ever-changing play of light over the water and mountains. For others, the lakes are simply a place to rest and reflect after gorilla trekking — a soothing retreat where time slows and the heart reconnects with nature.

Accommodation Around the Twin Lakes

While the area remains relatively undeveloped, there are a few charming lodges and guesthouses that blend perfectly with the natural surroundings:

  • Virunga Lodge – The most iconic luxury lodge in the area, perched high on a ridge between the two lakes, offering stunning 360-degree views of both Burera and Ruhondo. Its eco-luxury design and world-class service make it ideal for travelers seeking exclusivity and serenity.

  • The Garden Place Hotel (Musanze) – A comfortable midrange option close to town, offering easy access to both the park and the lakes.

  • La Locanda Guesthouse – A cozy, locally inspired stay for travelers who prefer a more personal, homely atmosphere.

For a rustic experience, community-run campsites and eco-lodges near the lakes allow visitors to stay close to nature while directly supporting local livelihoods.

Best Time to Visit

The Twin Lakes can be visited year-round, but the best time is during the dry seasons — from June to September and December to February — when the skies are clear, and visibility is perfect for photography and outdoor activities. During the rainy months, the hills are lush and green, and the lakes take on a mysterious misty charm that photographers especially adore.

Getting There

Burera and Ruhondo are about 20 kilometers (30–40 minutes) from Musanze town and roughly 2.5 hours from Kigali by road. The route is scenic and well-maintained, passing through villages, tea plantations, and rolling farmland. Private transfers can be arranged by your tour operator, or you can hire a car with a driver from Kigali or Musanze. For travelers on luxury itineraries, helicopter transfers from Kigali to the nearby Volcanoes National Park area can be arranged, followed by a short drive to the lakes.

Why Visit the Twin Lakes

While Rwanda’s national parks attract adventurers and wildlife enthusiasts, Burera and Ruhondo offer something equally rare — tranquility. Here, you can experience the soul of Rwanda, where daily life moves gently with the rhythm of the water and where the landscapes invite contemplation. Whether you come to unwind after gorilla trekking, to photograph nature’s poetry, or simply to breathe in the peace of the highlands, the Twin Lakes promise a deeply enriching experience.
